Today’s before and after photo shows how to crop to get the image you want. Two years ago I entered a photo contest held by Solo Cups. My dad suggested I include our dog in a photo, so I made party hats for Muffin and one of my daughters who particularly dotes on her. My youngest daughter stood to the side pouting since she wasn’t included.
Although I took several photos and my little gal moved aside, this first shot was my favorite. The cropped version won 1st runner up and $1,000 in the contest!
The Edits:
- Crop.
Yep—that’s it! Now I shoot in RAW, but two years ago I shot JPGs and set my camera to shoot Vivid, so the crop was my only edit.

Personally, I love the one with your daughter pouting! Such a great capture of emotion.
I’ve read some reasons for shooting in RAW instead of JPEG. Is it difficult to learn how to edit those type photos? Aren’t they HUGE photos? I’m worried about storage space on my computer!
Renee, at first I shot in JPG, then RAW and JPG, and then finally RAW only. I found that I was only editing the RAW files and didn’t need two of every photo. Switching over to RAW was a process though, getting used to working with those files. I’m not sure of the size difference, but yes, I think they’re bigger. I store photos on an external hard drive.
Great picture! I love that you had to crop out your little pouter…lol kids!
