Have you checked out all of the 31 Days series linked up at Nester’s place? I look forward to checking out some of the other great posts this month. Over 900 blogs have already signed up to participate.
I hope to give you ideas for editing your photos by showing you 31 Days of Before & After Shots. I get inspired by other people’s work and I hope you do, too!
Here is the original of this image of my son:
This is the final, edited image:
Here are my edits:
- Use the spot removal tool in Lightroom to get rid of the blemishes (I never edit away the scar under his eye—that’s part of him—but I edit zits. They’re temporary and that’s not how I see him.)
- Use Lightroom’s B&W High Contrast preset (convert the image to black and white and bump the contrast settings, making the blacks blacker and the whites whiter.)
- Tweak the exposure (brightness) until it feels right.
I converted this photo to black and white to even the skin tone. It’s more dramatic and really makes his eyes pop.
What do you think?

Maria, I love your enthusiasm! I’d love your feedback or any ideas for how I can improve the series.
I love your topic and pictures! 🙂
Thank you, Becca! Here’s to a great month. 🙂
So cool! I am really excited to learn from your series! I have Photoshop Elements, so I appreciate you giving the general descriptions to give me some idea of what to do with what I have. 🙂
Spring, I appreciate your feedback as an Elements user. Feel free to give me any other ideas!
Beautiful! I love the B&W version! I have always loved the dramatic-ness that comes from a black & white.
