One of the primary things we recycle is clothing, especially costumes and dress clothes, which tend to stay in good shape. I’ve always been a discount shopper, but I’m becoming better at checking Goodwill before paying retail. Men’s dress shirts—often neatly ironed or with dry cleaning tags attached—are some of the best bargains you’ll find at thrift stores.
Recently my 9-year-old son wore a shirt that originally belonged to his 24-year-old brother. I couldn’t believe we still had it and that it looked so good! I snapped a picture with my phone and texted it to my oldest son. That shirt had been a favorite and brought back memories; we both thought it was neat to see it worn again.
A few years ago I found matching dresses for our three oldest girls for Easter. Those dresses have not only been worn to church numerous times over the years, they’ve also been to weddings and a Father/Daughter Dance. This year the two youngest of our four girls fit into the smaller dresses. We’ve certainly gotten our money’s worth out of them.
We’re planning a garage sale this spring, since I’m finally ready to part with our baby clothes and equipment. I’ll keep a few special items, but most will go on to find new owners and continue to be used.
Do you recycle clothes? What’s one of the best garage sale or thrift store finds you’ve ever made?
Leave a comment on this post for your chance to win a sample box of the Scott products pictured above. For additional entries, tweet or facebook it and leave separate comments letting me know that you did. Congratulations to Gena, last week’s winner!

Great giveaway! I have always been a fan of Goodwill/Salvation Army since I was in high school. You really can find some great stuff. It’s really great if you have kids that grow out of things in about 10 seconds!

My best find was not at a garage sale or thrift store, but my absolute favorite– the clearance rack!
One day I walked into Baby Gap/Gap Kids and the manager told me that anything that ended in a .97 was 1.97!!! I walked out of there with tons of clothes for 1.97 a piece– baby bunting, baby gifts, pants, shirts, jackets, pj’s… My heart still races a bit when I think of that day! 🙂
We recycle clothes by making quilts with them!
i use old tees to make pillow and my sister got me a mini fre for 20 buck before i well to college .
Great post! I have always like thrift type stores because I really love the clothing from the 30’s – 50’s like 3 piece suits and they are hard to find new but pretty easy at second hand places. Also, they are great when you’re low on money and need to get something for a job interview (done it myself!)

I love the recycled shirt from 1998! And I thought 7 years was a long time to “save” clothes!
I liked on FB!
