On Saturday, June 5, iHeartFaces orchestrated a 20-city Photo Walk Across America. I had the pleasure of leading the Atlanta walk at historic Oakland Cemetery, assisted by my pal Mishelle.
I had taken a trial run the weekend before, and already gotten some of the shots I wanted. That, plus the fact that leading the walk, making sure we had lunch reservations, and praying our cars weren’t vandalized (two were) occupied enough of my mind that it took a while before I could actually focus on shooting. Oh, well. The beauty of a photo walk is the socializing, ya know, and that was just right. 😉
The two most visited graves, author Margaret Mitchell and golf legend Bobby Jones:
A photo walk in the South should have a healthy representation of magnolias and hydrangeas…
…and of course, tombs and tombstones.
Confederate soldiers:
Potter’s Field:
Hopefully this post won’t break Flickr, which is hosting all the images. 🙂
We followed the photo walk with lunch across the street at the appropriately named Six Feet Under restaurant.
Fortunately, Heather (kneeling, right end of the front row) had a tripod and got a group shot!
[I would be negligent if I didn’t warn you that while Oakland Cemetery is obviously a visually stunning place to shoot, it requires more than average precautions. In the parking lot, you stand a very strong chance of having your vehicle vandalized. Park inside the cemetery; there is an automobile entrance facing the parking lot. Make sure to allow room for other cars to pass. There is a nice visitors’ center with restroom and snacks. If you plan on walking throughout the cemetery, parking next to the visitors’ center is a wise choice.]
I’m so bummed that I didn’t go to mine in Columbus OH. The weekend just got too hectic to drive 2 hours.
You got some fab pictures. Sorry about the vandalism!
OH what great photos! So sorry I missed it this year.
wow that sounds like a dangerous spot. i’m a little shocked that there’s that much risk. you got some great shots though.
Fortunately, we went by Oakland the weekend before and I saw a car that had been broken into and a camera was stolen. I sent a message to all the attendees about parking in the cemetery. I get the feeling it happens a lot.
Oh my goodness! It looks like you had a fabulously fun day! : )
My friend Sarah lives in Atlanta and she went on your walk. Glad it was a fun adventure. I loved your magnolia. Oh my heart. So pretty!
