This week I stepped into a role I never imagined I’d fill: wedding photographer. My sister got married on Sunday, and she asked me to take the photos. Apparently this sort of thing happens often when you buy a nice camera. Unfortunately, I haven’t mastered my digital SLR and made some amateur mistakes, but with nearly 900 photos taken, there are some nice shots. I think a total of 5 different people took pictures with my camera, since they thoughtfully decided that it would be nice if it looked like I attended the wedding, too.

Dawn, I’m still learnin’ my camera and wishing I knew MORE, too! This shot is stunning, though–just the kind I love! If you have more that evoke that kind of emotion, you’ve done well, friend :).

Nicely done. We bought a new camera with a good lens a few months before our little one was born (in Oct. of last year). And we’ve been asked to shoot a wedding this summer. Any tips you have would be greatly appreciated. 🙂

Here are the Photoshop steps I used on the shot: I ran it through 3 of the Pioneer Woman’s free actions: slight sharpen, then vintage, and then lovely and ethereal. You can download them here: http://thepioneerwoman.com/photography/2008/04/actions/. I’m glad the shot came out so nice afterward because I totally messed up my ISO setting and the picture was originally a little grainy. The sharpened cleaned it up a bit, the vintage accented the graininess in a good way, and the lovely and ethereal blurred it all nicely.
Here are my prep steps for the big day:
My preparation tactic was to prepare myself as well as possible both taking the pictures and working on them afterward. I purchased 2 books for prep purposes: The Digital Photography Book (volumes 1 & 2) by Scott Kelby. I attended a Photoshop seminar in Nashville last week to pick up extra tips for enhancing the pictures after the fact. I bought another book there: The Adobe Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby. I also read posts about wedding photography on the Digital Photography School blog, such as http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/your-best-friends-wedding/ and looked at the wedding photos here: http://www.theimageisfound.com/wedding/.
beautiful, Dawn!!

What a lovely shot. These kinds of pictures are timeless. You don’t focus on an out-of-style dress or hairstyle. Just pure and simple love.
