The day before my new camera arrived I explained to my husband that although I am very motivated to learn, this would be a whole lot more equipment than I’m capable of using at this point. He looked at me and said, “ESO.”
“Huh?” was my intelligent reply.
“ESO. Equipment Superior to Operator.” He then explained to me, based on his experience many years ago in retail electronics, that this is a code referring to the kind of people who who can’t figure out how to connect their VCR to their television (or make it stop flashing ): “Televisions, line 1, ESO.”
ESO. That’s me, alright.
I am having lots of fun and have already snapped over 300 pictures in a week’s time. My goal is to learn to properly use the manual settings. Right now I’m just happy to be utilizing the auto settings: macro, sports, portrait, etc.
I’ve got to answer the big questions like should you use flash for shady outdoor conditions?

What do you think? I’ll post more pictures later; I’ve certainly got enough.
I’m just waiting for the day when my E won’t be so completely S to its O.
What a cute post! And a darling girl!! Yes, I have to be OSE or it drives me nuts. I have been known to take apart the VCR to fix it or get out the DVD that was left inside in transport and is now *really* inside! I can figure how to set things and change things…
I hate being inferior to electronics equipment!
I cannot tell you how wonderful it was to go to Amanda’s blog and see what you did! It is really nice!
Thanks a lot! blessings~
I am soooo jealous! 😉 I have to wait until May when we get our “check” to get mine. I’m certainly a whole lot less S of an O to my E! Even the last digital (I’m already speaking of it as if it was gone), I hardly did any manual settings. It is a 5px and although it has high resolution, it is a point and click for the most part. No interchangeable lenses. I miss my 35mm (which is broken it seems… we got it out and bought film and batteries for it only to find that it won’t work any more). I wouldn’t either if someone left me in a closet or in storage for nearly 5 years.
I am a big “no flash” person. I love the natural colors without flash. I do try and maximize light sources when I don’t use flash, though (ie: like making the person look towards whatever natural light there is).
Can’t wait to see your photos! Did you see the one that Morgan took for my ww yesterday? She’s getting to be pretty good at the photo thing. Not sure if I’ll let her use my new camera (talking about it as if it was already here). 😉
I hate using flash. But my friend who has a really nice camera (mine is point and shoot digital) took some pics in my house with her flash and you couldn’t even tell when she showed me the end result. So I’m sure it depends on the camera.
with mine, the flash always looks bad. always.
I’m feeling a little green (even though St Paddy’s day is over) with envy. I REALLY want a digital SLR. I miss using my lens and having better control over my photos. Sigh. One of these days. Have fun with it, though.
I usually stay away from the flash, but it can be helpful for some low light conditions. In your case, I think the flash helped highlight her face a little more.
I had to laugh at the ESO remark! I imagine I’ll be using that one in the very near future (likely in relation to myself!).
I stay away from the flash most of the time. I JUST got an SLR (Nikon) as well and decided to order a training video so I could really learn instead of just play most of the time!! :o) But, playing around is fun too, so enjoy.
Awww, she is *so* adorable! Just a doll. 🙂
I think both look nice. Just depends on what *you* want it to look like. 🙂
And I put a scroll-box on my sidebar, but since it ends with a as does my sidebar, it will only work at the very end where it ends… I looked at your blog source to see if you had a different scrollbar, but it’s the same. Do you know what I can do?
Love
MJ
See, I prefer it without the flash… but if you had a good fill flash with a soft box, it might make all the difference in the world… I don’t know yet though because I don’t have one! LOL I am hoping to get an SB600…
