Six months. Six months ago today, a surgeon piece

Six months.

Six months ago today, a surgeon pieced together my shattered right humerus with a plate and screws. I’ve got an 11” scar from shoulder to elbow, the span needed to connect solid bones together. No doubt, this has been the physical low point in my life, but today I’ve got nothing but gratitude. 🙌

I’ve started throwing a rubber ball about the size and weight of a softball at occupational therapy. My aim is $#%& most of the time, but it feels soooo good. I’ve moved past muscle memory into the overthinking stage, but that’s okay: I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t overthink. I couldn’t get to sleep one night because I couldn’t stop throwing that ball in my head. 😂

I was a third of the way through the second draft of my first novel when I fell. Now I’m on my fourth draft, have received feedback from beta readers, and continue to edit and polish each day. I’m three lessons away from completing a thirty lesson online writing class, and when I finish it and my fourth draft, I’ll hire an editor for a manuscript assessment.

I’ve booked pitch slots at the Atlanta Writers Conference in May, I’m submitting my first thirty pages and book synopsis in a contest at another conference, and I entered a short story in another competition.

Life is hard sometimes, but God is good. I’m so grateful for progress. 😍

The production was incredible and I can’t believe how much the lead sounded like Barbra Streisand, who starred in the 1968 movie about the life of Fanny Brice, a comedienne and entertainer from the early 1900s.

When I started writing a novel in April 2023, I had no idea it would take more than a year to write or change me so completely. I feel like a different person.

Tonight I finished the first draft on the due date I chose months ago. I pushed through with my highest ever word count in a day (and wrote almost 7K more words than my goal), because we have a family camping trip this weekend and I didn’t want to be too distracted about finishing to be fully present.

My agent became my acquisitions editor (xoxoxo @sammynruth 😘) so I need a new one. And I I’ll need a publisher too. And 2nd & 3rd & however many drafts. But right now I’m celebrating a big WIN!! (Thanks for listening ♥️)

For fifteen years, @incourage has been a home for the hearts of women around the world. It’s been a home for my heart too.

Each year, the contributors go on a retreat together (thank you, @dayspringcards!). It’s a brilliant plan, really: we spend time face-to-face (geographically, we’re across the US, Canada, and Iceland), building relationships that carry us through hard times. Then we “go first” sharing our stories with you.

I love these ladies!

Super thankful to get home safely last night (& on our way to see @seanofthesouth tonight!). On my final flight, our plane was struck by lightning. I was engrossed in a book on my kindle and never lowered the window covering, so I saw it hit the wing out of the corner of my eye. We heard a big pop and everyone gasped, yelled, whatever, but then started talking again. Most of the windows were down and people didn’t know what happened. I started praying and paid attention to see if the plane felt funny, but it didn’t.

When we landed, they said we should thank the pilot for getting us safely through the storm. I asked the two flight attendants at the exit if we’d been hit, and they confirmed it. I seemed to be the only passenger who knew it. 😳

Breaking bread together involves more than eating;

Breaking bread together involves more than eating; it’s about serving people and spending time with them. It’s about slowing down, sharing stories, and savoring food and fellowship. You don’t need to throw a fancy dinner party (although you certainly can if you’re able and enjoy it).

But all you really need to do is just open your circle a little wider. Pull up an extra chair to the table.

The past month has been pretty special: birthdays,

The past month has been pretty special: birthdays, a wedding shower, fun times with the kids and grandkids, a writing retreat. In the middle of it, I’ve been crazy productive: I’ll hit 30K words on my first novel this weekend. We are blessed. ♥️🙌

When we graduated our last of eight children in th

When we graduated our last of eight children in the spring, it didn’t fully sink in. This summer I realized the reality would hit on the first day of a new year, when there were no binders to buy, no books to gather, no lesson plans to be made.

Today is that day.

Last night I dreamed about teaching. I belonged to a community of students, other women, and even a little white dog that was almost otherworldly. As with most dreams, I didn’t hold onto the details of the storyline when I awoke, but at the end I was crying, not with sadness, but with deep contentment. I felt so much love for the people around me.

In real life, I’m in a cabin on a writing retreat, an appropriate place to mark the transition between thirty years of homeschooling (not a typo) and life beyond. Although I’ve written nonfiction for years, I’m working on my first novel. With nonfiction, I submitted book proposals with an introduction and three sample chapters and then signed a contract to write the book. With fiction, I need to write the whole thing and pray a publisher wants to buy it. It’s a walk of faith, but I keep plugging away. Today I’ll pass the 23K mark of the 80K words I need.
