I took this photo of Michael Hyatt at the BlissDom Conference earlier this year. Michael is not only a popular author, blogger, and public speaker, but also a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. I like the casual tone with Michael smiling and his grandbaby on the screen behind him.
[You might have to hold the camera to your eye, focused on your subject, until just the right moment. Although you might feel it coming, sometimes the shot will surprise you!]
Indoor conference photos don’t usually look good in color. The lighting is artificial, which throws off the white balance (your photos may look yellow or blue) unless you correct it. I love the play of light and shadows that you see in the final B&W image, and the baby stands out clearly.
The Edits:
- Correct white balance (this was before I decided to make it black and white).
- Crop.
- Apply B&W Creative – Look 3 preset (I think this was a default Lightroom preset in LR3).
- Add clarity, which adds crispness (you like your images crispy, right?).
- Apply a vignette (darken the edges).
