The past month has been pretty special: birthdays, a wedding shower, fun times with the kids and grandkids, a writing retreat. In the middle of it, I’ve been crazy productive: I’ll hit 30K words on my first novel this weekend. We are blessed. ♥️🙌

When we graduated our last of eight children in the spring, it didn’t fully sink in. This summer I realized the reality would hit on the first day of a new year, when there were no binders to buy, no books to gather, no lesson plans to be made.

Today is that day.

Last night I dreamed about teaching. I belonged to a community of students, other women, and even a little white dog that was almost otherworldly. As with most dreams, I didn’t hold onto the details of the storyline when I awoke, but at the end I was crying, not with sadness, but with deep contentment. I felt so much love for the people around me.

In real life, I’m in a cabin on a writing retreat, an appropriate place to mark the transition between thirty years of homeschooling (not a typo) and life beyond. Although I’ve written nonfiction for years, I’m working on my first novel. With nonfiction, I submitted book proposals with an introduction and three sample chapters and then signed a contract to write the book. With fiction, I need to write the whole thing and pray a publisher wants to buy it. It’s a walk of faith, but I keep plugging away. Today I’ll pass the 23K mark of the 80K words I need.

For those of you beginning a fresh school year, what are you most excited about? For those enjoying your retirement from homeschooling or parenting students, did you (or will you) pursue new interests with your extra time?

The yearly @incourage retreat is one of the highlights of my year. At surface level, I relax, recharge, maybe get a hint of a tan. But face time with my fellow contributors always takes me deep. Love these ladies sooooo much! ♥️

Our family will celebrate two milestones in May: o

Our family will celebrate two milestones in May: our youngest child will graduate from high school and, after 30 consecutive years, I’ll retire from my job as a homeschool mom. This also means we’re in our final sports season with a child at home. We’ve cheered for our children at hundreds of baseball and softball games, as well as countless track and cross-country meets. So much is coming to a close.

To call it the end of an era feels like an understatement.

I recently devoted two weeks of my life (literally) to painting our dark kitchen cabinets white.

One day in — when I realized I’d need minimum SIX coats (some areas have seven, eight, nine . . . 🤷‍♀️) I questioned WHY IN THE WORLD I’d decided to do this. I just wanted to quit (obviously not an option).

My husband, who joined me on nights and weekends to degloss and prime, said (and I quote), “We can do anything.” I had no idea how powerful those words could be from the one (lowercase o) who knows me best.

Encouragement is an outrageously powerful thing. I’ll bet someone in your life could use some.

Studying for a talk on Essential Oils from a Biblical Perspective that I’m giving in MI and I had to stop and go make this blend from my book It All Began in a Garden. It’s dreamy!! 😍♥️

DIVINELY DAVANA PERFUME BLEND
6 drops lime 6 drops vanilla 4 drops davana 4 drops black spruce
4 drops copaiba 3 drops ylang ylang
3 drops sandalwood

Combine the oils in a 5-ml glass roll-on bottle and top with 80 proof vodka. Shake gently to combine and before each use.
