One of my favorite snow day childhood memories is the ice cream my grandmother made from snow. She never used the first snow of the season, believing it was full of impurities from the air. Here in Atlanta, I’m sure we restock our impurities daily. Still, this week’s was our second snow.
A friend posted to Facebook that she made snow ice cream, using Paula Deen’s recipe. It tastes like my grandmother’s. The kids loved it so much we made it twice on Wednesday.
You’ll need a can of sweetened condensed milk and a teaspoon of vanilla.
And snow: eight cups of it.
Pour the milk and vanilla on top and stir well. Throw out any chunks of ice.
Enjoy!
I made this Sunday night and my son loved it! He said it’s the only time he’d ever eaten yellow snow. LOL, that’s a good thing!
My grandmother said the same thing! When I make it and eat it now it takes me right back to my childhood sitting in my grandmother’s kitchen while she mixed it up. Yum.
great activity. I would love to share with my readers.
I don’t think I would ever try this….it just looks gross to me. :S
Curious as to why she thought a first snow be more impure than a second snow? It’s the same sky, same air, clouds forming from the same moisture, etc…
Ally, it was my grandmother. That’s what she said, so we waited. Actually, it’s really good stuff. There were 10 kids standing in that room waiting to eat it, so I didn’t get a good shot of the finished product.
